==================================================================================== Update as of 7/22/2022

As we finish up the final activities on the Pomerado North Replacement project, we would like to thank the Rancho Bernardo and Poway communities for your patience. While the pipe has been fully installed and the trench sealed, our crews have been hard at work finishing up all the important pipeline connections and installation of valves and regulator stations to ensure the full and safe operation of this new pipeline.

The nearly six miles of new pipe in Rancho Bernardo and Poway was connected to the natural gas distribution system in late June and the existing 1949 pipe was officially taken out of service on July 13th. The new state of the art pipe is delivering natural gas to our customers.

Final paving and road restoration activities along Highland Valley Road and Pomerado Road have been taking place for the past couple of months and are now complete. Final grind and cap and slurry seal has now also been completed.

Once this fresh pavement cures, the striping along streets and traffic loops at intersections will be begin. This is expected to be completed over the next several weeks.

Thank you for your continued patience and understanding for the duration of this important pipeline safety project that has experienced some delays.

SDG&E has remained committed to completing this work as safely and expeditiously as possible, while working with the City of Poway and City of San Diego on adhering to permit requirements.

===================================================================================== Update on SDG&E pipeline work along Pomerado Rd as of March 31, 2022:

===================================================================================== SDG&E’s Pomerado North Replacement Project is nearly complete.

All 5.7 miles of pipe along Pomerado Road from Highland Valley Road to Ted Williams Parkway was fully installed in mid-February. The new pipe was successfully hydro tested March 1 (which validated the pipe’s integrity) and was connected to our existing natural gas system on March 10.

Our crews have experienced some delays due to weather and having to trench through hard granite rock in Pomerado Road but are working as quickly and safely as possible to wrap this project up.

The last bit of work involves connecting a main line valve station and regulator stations to the new pipe at a couple of intersections. With limited construction hours at intersections with high volumes of traffic, it’s taking longer than anticipated to complete the work.

In addition to the intersection work, crews are also doing road restoration, such as sidewalk repair, curb and gutter replacement and final paving. We anticipate total project completion at the end of April.

===================================================================================== Update on SDG&E pipeline work along Pomerado Rd as of March 4th, 2022:

===================================================================================== SDG&E’s Pomerado North Replacement Project is nearly complete, at 98 percent.
All 5.7 miles of the new state of the art pipe has been installed in Poway and Rancho Bernardo, along Pomerado Road from Highland Valley Road to Ted Williams Parkway.

Additionally, the new segment of pipe was successfully strength-tested this week to validate the integrity of the pipeline.
This test entails the 5.7 miles of new pipe being filled with water and the pressure raised to a higher than maximum pressure level to test the strength and integrity of the pipe.

There are a few remaining crews finishing up work over the next couple of weeks at a few locations prepping the pipe to be tied into SDG&E’s natural gas system.
There could be minor traffic delays along Pomerado Road and Bernardo Trails Drive and at the intersection of Rancho Bernardo Road and Bernardo Heights Parkway, as crews connect a main line valve station and regulator stations to the new pipe.

Next week, we anticipate tying in this new segment of pipe to our natural gas system.
The final paving and road restoration will continue through the end of March, when we expect to reach full completion of the project

. ===================================================================================== Update on SDG&E pipeline work along Pomerado Rd as of January 24th, 2022:

===================================================================================== SDG&E is nearing completion of the pipeline safety project along Pomerado Road in Rancho Bernardo and the City of Poway.
SDG&E crews have installed approximately 5.7 miles of new pipe along with advanced safety features, bringing the Pomerado North Replacement Project to more than 90 percent completion.

Pipe installation has been completed in the City of Poway and is expected to be completed in Rancho Bernardo mid-February.
Once installation is complete, SDG&E will pressure test the new segment of pipe with water in late February to validate the integrity of the pipeline. Once this test is complete, we will connect the new pipe to our natural gas transmission system, in early March.

SDG&E’s Pomerado North Replacement Project – Pipeline Safety Enhancement Plan (PSEP)
Email Update #5
October 21, 2021

A lot of progress has been made on the pipeline safety project over the summer. SDG&E crews have been able to complete the installation of approximately 2.5 miles of new pipe in Pomerado Road along with advanced safety features. This brings us to more than 40 percent completion on the Pomerado North Replacement Project. The length of the total project is approximately six miles between Ted Williams Parkway and Highland Valley Road; two miles in the City of Poway and four miles in Rancho Bernardo.

For the past several months, three construction crews have been working to install new, modern pipe along Pomerado Road in Rancho Bernardo and Poway. Since the start of construction in May, SDG&E crews have trenched a combined total of 2.7 miles along Pomerado Road and installed more than 2.5 miles of new pipe in the trench at the three locations along Pomerado Road between Ted Williams Parkway and Stone Canyon Road.

Last month, a major hurdle for crews was to install a segment of pipe under a golf cart tunnel that goes under Pomerado Road near the Oaks North Community. SDG&E needed to bore under the tunnel by using a sophisticated technique called Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD). Before the 16-inch pipe could be installed under the substructure, a 24-inch reamer drill was used to enlarge the bore hole under the golf cart tunnel. Once the reaming was complete, the 320-foot section of pipe was pulled into the bore hole five feet beneath the cart tunnel.

To see how this HDD technique was deployed in Rancho Bernardo, click this link to watch a video. You can also find the video and additional information on www.sdge.com/psep under the “Pipeline Safety Enhancement Project” projects folder under the “Pomerado North Replacement Project” project.

Update as of July 10, 2021:

Starting Monday, July 12th, a third SDG&E crew will be added to the Pomerado North Replacement Project to accelerate the installment of the new natural gas pipe along Pomerado Road in Rancho Bernardo and Poway. The third crew will be located along Pomerado Road near Monte Vista Road and will also be working in a south to north direction. In preparation for the trenching that will take place next week, this stretch of road was potholed (confirmation digs) this week, and under traffic control.

Since the start of construction on May 17th, SDG&E crews have trenched a combined 1,600 feet along Pomerado Road and installed 1,127 feet of new pipe in the trench at the two locations along Pomerado Road near Ted Williams Parkway and along Pomerado Road near Stone Canyon Road.

With the addition of the third construction crew, drivers should prepare for potential delays at three locations on Pomerado Road, all working in a south to north direction.

Steady progress has been made over the past month on the Pomerado North Replacement Project in Poway and Rancho Bernardo.

Since the start of construction on May 17th, San Diego Gas and Electric Company (SDG&E) crews have trenched more than 1,600 feet along Pomerado Road near Ted Williams Parkway and along Pomerado Road near Stone Canyon Road and installed approximately 650 feet of new pipe.

Currently, crews are excavating the trench and installing new 16-inch pipe. The pipe is then welded and x-rayed, before applying a special protective coating to the pipe that will protect it from corrosion. A yellow warning mesh and fiber optic cable are placed in the trench over the pipe to enhance safety by minimizing accidental dig-ins as well as remote detection of leaks, intrusion and ground disturbances.

Over the next few months, two separate construction crews will be working from south-to-north on the project. Construction work zones for pipe installation will typically be approximately 1,000 feet long. On an average day, about 120 feet of pipe will be installed in the trench.

The primary pipe installation portion of the project is expected to be completed by the end of November. Some additional testing and street restoration work will follow.

This notice is to inform you that reduced traffic lanes may be necessary along Pomerado Road as we work from south-to-north
